In Memoriam... Joel Morales Babilonia (2000-2012)

I recently learned of the passing of a very young descendant of the Babilonia Garcia line of Barrio Naranjo, Joel Morales Babilonia.

Joel was a very bright, sensitive fifth grader who attended Public School 57 in East Harlem.  Frustrated to no end by relentless bullying, he ended his life at the end of May 2012.  It is regrettable  to lose a life, and even more tragic when it's someone so very young, already exhausted by these negative experiences.

My condolences to his family, his mother Lizbeth and aunt Angelica.

QEPD Joel.

Do you have any information about family Babilonia Garcia, Babilonia Velez or Babilonia Deynes?

Hi Emily,
Yes I do. The three lines you mention, at least one had a large family in Naranjo.
Baldomero Babilonia Torres (1838-1908) + Trinidad Garcia Segui (1835- aft 1910) had 13 children
Francisco Bonifacio Babilonia Deines (1869) + Agapita Velez Hernandez (1888) had 4 children
and
Ramon Donato Babilonia Carive (ca 1844-bef 1885) was married 2x + Maria Celestina Deines Acevedo (2 children)
+ Maria Albertana Acevedo Mendez (3 children)
They were in Barrio Marias. Also note there is some complexity due to slave holding earlier in the 19th c.

Also look up my article, Don Miguel Babilonia Polanco (1743-1813) and his Descendants: From Mallorca, Spain to Moca, Puerto Rico. Hereditas, 16:1, 2015, 6-47.

Thanks for reading the blog!
